4 questions to Ron @ Nedap Retail

I’m Ron Weikamp and I’ve been working as a software developer at Nedap Retail for about four years. I write software related to calculating and predicting inventory based on RFID data.

Why did you decide to work at Nedap?

After my course, I was looking for a large technology company where I’d have the opportunity to become a better programmer. I started a learning path at Nedap University. This gave me the opportunity to take very interesting Computer Science courses at the university. The passion for technology and its practical application also appealed to me. So, interesting things to work on, but also interesting products to use.

Can you describe a typical working day?

I work in a team of about 25 developers, which includes a subteam of around eight back-end developers. We often start our day with a stand-up meeting, where we share what we’re currently working on. At the same time, we have coffee and talk about the weekend, films or home automation.

I also write code, review code or sometimes solve a bug. Ultimately, we provide software services. The service I feel responsible for is gaining popularity and more and more features are being added. I enjoy making the code more refined, easier to understand and less error-prone. And, at the same time, improving it in a way that allows it to continue performing well. In addition to writing code, I do other tasks, such as presenting, teaching or research.

What do you want to achieve at Nedap?

I haven’t got any specific goals in mind, but I do want to carry on learning. In IT, neat solutions always arise along with new problems. I’d like me and my colleagues to be able to appreciate and investigate these developments. That’s the culture embedded at Nedap, and I want to continue to be part of this.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work at Nedap?

It’s important for me and my colleagues to be enthusiastic about our work. It means we can laugh when something works, ask questions out of curiosity, and be really disappointed when something doesn’t work the way we want it to. So, make sure you choose a line of work that largely motivates you intrinsically.

Which way are you heading?

At Nedap, we’re not so keen on fixed routes: we prefer to challenge you to shape your own future.
